Norton Customer Service Leaves Me Stuck in Safe Mode

Hi,

 

I called Norton, because my scans were getting stuck.  I have Norton 360 on an Lenovo Thinkpad X300 running XP SP3.  The Norton representative (Vivek G.) rebooted my computer in safe mode, lost the network connection, and then could not help me get the computer out of safe mode.  He said my best bet was to contact Lenovo or Microsoft!  My computer is still stuck in safe mode.

 

Any ideas on where to go next with this? 

 

I do have a task manager when I boot, but otherwise the screen is black with the Norton communication window open.

I can get to boot options and to the Thinkpad rescue utility.

In addition to the scan failing, I had problems with what I thought was a legitimate scp install awhile back.  After that, Internet Explorer would not work, clicking on an icon didn't work but right click+open did, and the Norton scan started to fail.

I don't have a recent backup, so I want to find a way to get one before any other dramatic changes are made to my computer.

 

I'm beginning to think that my best bet is to boot off another drive or on an entirely different system, take a backup and rebuild my system from scratch.  I build Linux system sregularly, but haven't done much work on Windows, so please give details with any suggestions.  I'm even willing to take the computer to a reliable third party, but given I thought Norton was a reliable third party, I'm hesitant about where to go.

 

I think Norton customer service should evaluate the chances of significant harm to your computer before they act, and advise you to take a full backup or perform other tasks (e.g. take a checkpoint) to reduce the risk.  I work in the computer field, and it is very bad form to leave a customer high and dry like this.  Also, if anyone knows how to send a complaint to Norton, please let me know. I  could not find a feedback form or complaint number anywhere.  I have a few other suggestions on customer service for them.
