Enabling a local java applet to run in Chrome

I created a small java applet (an export of a mindmap program). When I load the HTML page that contains the applet, I get a security error message from Chrome. "Your security settings have blocked a local application from running." I've looked through the Norton 360 interface but don't see any way to change the security settings to enable me to run the applet locally.

What do I need to do or is there a good reason why I should not runn the applet locally?
