Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 Homegroups not working with latest Norton 360

Problem:

Bought new laptop with Windows 8 (later updated to Windows 8.1). I use Homegroups and Synctoy for syncing data between the laptop and desktop. Initially after purchasing new laptop with some difficulty I was able to get Homegroups and Synctoy working. After I installed the Windows 8.1 update I had to update my Norton 360. I haven't been able to get either working (Synctoy works within my Homegroups) since both updates. When I shut off Norton Firewall I am able to get both working perfectly. As soon as I turn the firewall back on and restart the computers both stop working. I'm sure it is in the Norton 360 firewall, but it is too granular and I'm tired of guessing and trial and error. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

probable false positive virus detection

I  have Norton Security Suiite provided by my ISP Comcast/Xfinity on my three computers. I  uninstalled Windows Live Essentials 2012 on my Dell Desktop, that has Windows7 32 bit OS.  When I attempt to download and install Windows Live Essentials 2009 ( which features I prefer to later versions), and , later, even Windows Live Essentials 2012 again, directly from the Microsoft site

(http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx), I get a message telling me that the files for each contained a virus and was deleted by  my virus protection software.  I sincerely doubt that software downloaded directly from the Microsoft site would contain a virus.  But I don't know how to defeat this probable false detection.  I even suspended the virus protection for one hour, but the same problem reoccurred.  Has anyone had a similar problem with Norton anti-virus, and how do I overcome it.  I have reported the probable false detection to Symantec, but don't know if I will hear from them tomorrow.

Legit Site?

My renewal is coming up, so I did a search for Norton 360 sale. I came upon this site (please delete link, if necessary),  , which link by an ad when you do a search for Norton 360 on Google. In a previous post, it was stated that Symantec, "Part of the agreement with those partners is that Symantec will not undercut the pricing of these partners." So, it made me wonder if, despite the Norton.com (implying it's runned by Symantec) and the Safe Web icon that appear, is this site legitimate?

Also, if I can ask one more question.  If this site is legitimate, can I just get the product key without downloading anything?

Error 8506 421 keeps coming up. I have Windows 7 Professional  (Toshiba satellite laptop) and am current with all updates. I have followed the many suggestions to remedy the situation however none have worked. I have used the Norton Removal tool, the Norton eraser and the rebootable recovery tool, none of worked. I have re installed the product (Norton 360) 3 different times and keep getting the 8506 error. My system indicates that no anti virus software is on my computer !

freezing when idle time tasks run & Event Viewer reports \Device\harddisk\DR0, has a bad block

I purchased new SONY lap top i7-3632QM @2.20Ghz, system memory 8Gb Hardisk 1Tb running Windows 8, 64 bit.

Originally had trial version of McAfee installed which I removed and installed Norton 360.

Everything went well until mid October when everything started to freeze when left idle and I had to reboot. Within a few days the whole system froze and when I tried to reboot the system would freeze at the log in page before Windows had started.

I returned it to the store who restored factory settings. They then removed McAfee and installed Norton 360. I updated to Windows 8.1. Within two weeks everything started to freeze again.

Returned it to the store who turned off all non-standard programmes running in the background (itunes, quick time, TomTom etc.).

Problem still continues. After researching internet found others reporting similar problems with 'Norton Idle Time' seemingly the cause.

I switched off the 'Idle Time Optimizer' and whilst no longer having to reboot there is a lag of up to 30 seconds before the programmes respond to any instructions.

I have noticed that every time the computer freezes the Event Viewer reports the following:-

Event 7

Log name: System

Source: disk

Event ID: 7

Level: Error

The device, Device-Harddisk-DR0, has a bad block.

Event 129

Log name: System

Source: iaStorA

Event ID: 129

Level: Warning

Reset to device, Device-RaidPort0, was issued.

I am about to return the lap top again to the store but wanted some input from anyone else who has a similar problem.

Just wanted to ask why Norton has not solved this freezing during idle time as the problem appears to have been around since 2008 and has impacted on various Window systems (XP, Vista, 7 home, 7 pro, 8 and 8.1)

All my updates are set to automatic and currently Norton 360 version 21.1.0.18.

Will I have to cancel Norton 360 and use McAfee?

Thankfully my old lap top running windows Vista and Norton 360 is still running with no problems.

setupIstation.exe

My children's elementary school requires them to do homework using Istation.  I made repeated attempts to install Istation from www.Istation.com on my Windows PC, but Norton 360 continues to flag "setupIstation.exe" as a dangerous file.

The File Insight warning is alarming:  "There are many indications that this file is untrustworthy."

I'm looking for recommendations on what to do next.

Norton 360 Premier

Hi,

I'm new to the forum, so please bear with me.

I'm using Paint.net, a freeware image editor and have installed several filters and plugins (.dll files) to achieve different things with images.  Before installing the .dll files into the appropriate folder, I ran a Norton virus scan as well as a Malware Bytes anti-malware scan; both returned clean results on these files.

This morning Norton 360 auto protect started to scan these files when I opened the program.  These files had already been deemed clean by both Norton and Malware Bytes.  A "WS.Reputation.1" is what was displayed when I investigated further.  What I don't understand, is that if these files were infected or corrupted or whatever, why weren't they detected by the 1st scan?  And why is Norton now quarantining these dll files that have been installed for months now, with no ill effect?  I'm at a complete loss.  Thankfully I saved the files in a folder on the desktop, which Norton has not scanned.  It has only scanned the installed files.  Please help.

Thanks.

Critically low disk space on C drive

I am getting a "critically low disk space" message on my computer--there is virtually no space left on the C drive.  When I looked  at files and folders I found that there was 163 GB in the Norton 360 backup file.  The total capacity is 298 GB and I can account for most of the rest of the capacity in other files, such as pictures, and documents and settings etc.  I suppose I need to backup elsewhere and not on the computer but I can't seem to buy any backup from Norton offlne.  What do I need to do?

The product detects Trojan gen 2 but will not remove it. I have found previous board posts on this issue. Each of those seem to have a user specific fix. Your help would be greatly appreciated. I do not want to do a factory reset. Thank you Dirk

Norton is TERRIBLE since the update

I'm really getting fed up of this to be honest.

A week or so ago I checked for updates and it found a new version. I installed it, unsure about doing so due to past problems with norton never seeming to be ready and relised, once again I had to configure all the settings for the firewall, since it never remembers.

After going through that tedius process, I notice the UI is horrible, perhaps I'd just have to get use to it, but I certainly don't like how white it is with just the yellow boxes. Anyway, not a big deal.

Then I check my logs, and it's being absolutely SPAMMED day in day out with unauthoised access block and open file. Always the same things with the actor being things like CONHOST.EXE and the target being everything in the folder from programfiles x86\norton 360\engine\21.1.0.18\ (cltLMH.exe for example...but everything). The amount of spam it gives for this seems to be everytime I'm idle for a short amount of time, then ending up with 10-20 of these things.

I also get a ton of spam from WSCStub.exe always in pairs often minutes after each other, I'm gettign spam with chrome every time I open a new tab, I get spam with "searchfilterhost.exe" and "searchprotocolhost.exe constantly and I never had ANY of this until I installed the update.

However, despite these heavy annoyances, I'm finding that sometimes norton doesn't even open at all! For example, i turned on my computer the other morning, came back an hour or two later and noticed that I couldn't open "my computer" well, I could, but it was just the loading bar at the top, taking forever. I tried to open norton, and it just wouldn't open. I restarted and checked the firewall and notice that NOTHING had been reported since the night before and the stuff from the new restart. So, those two hours that I had the computer on, was I even protected??

Yesterday, i turn n the computer and have two instances of norton running.

Today, it's been on all day, I never checked anything but noticed steam connection had dropped and logged me back in while I was in a game, so I checked norton...and I couldn't open it! I restarted, checked the firewall, and once again, NOTHING in there, as though the computer wasn't even on, so all this time was I protected???

I pay for norton, but it's not giving my peace of mind. I've had it for years and I've always had really frustrating issues with it, normally from updates.

I don't go many places on the internet, I just frequent the same few sites and forums.

I don't download anything much at all.

I ONLY have norton running, I do not have any other firewall or AV installed/running, nor windows one.

I use CCleaner every month or so (haven't recently)

I do have anti-malware installed, but the free one that only scans and not runs in the background.

Why is this happened with norton? Am I REALLY going to have to uninstall and go through the whole removal process, reinstall, update and then configure my firewall all AGAIN because of an update? It's not even giving me peace of mind due to the amount of spam in the firewall (which after googling, it seems a lot of people are getting this from the update) I'm really fed up of this and don't really want to go to a free one, but starting to feel it's much less hassle.

Product Update - 21.1 of Norton Internet Security and Norton AntiVirus/Patch

$

Last night I got the new patch so I downloaded it and it was successful.  I always run Norton Updates twice just to be sure. There was another patch available as well and it was successful.

Now my issue is, there are two computers in the house.

They are connected by an ethoric (spelling) cable. My computer did not have the new patch available. I noticed a while ago that a patch was available, but I did not get it on my computer either.  In the past, I got the patch with no problems.  What could be the problem if any?

If I do not get the new patch soon I will download it manually.  I will wait a week or so.

Any information would be well appreciated.:cathappy:

System Restore point error -2147212542 when running Registry Cleanup?

Since the 19 September, whenever I run Registry Cleanup, the above error message occurs and the Registry Cleanup will not run, due to the fact that it cannot find a System Restore Point.  I have tried to run System Restore but it will not operate.  I received help from Norton Support via remote operation of my computer but they could not solve the problem, at the time and said they would contact me again within 3 days, in order to fix it.  Nobody came back to me to solve the problem.  Help!

The appearance of Norton 360 changed a few days ago. Is this supposed to be?

$

Was Norton 360 changed recently?  Saturday morning (11/16) when I booted up my computer the Norton 360 desktop icon had moved to a different position, and when I clicked on it, an "activate account" choice appeared, and it was re-activated and the number of days remaining was given.

The appearance of the Norton 360 main page is different now, with more white and light grey colors.  The different appearance is unsettling.  The only functional difference I'm seeing is that the optimizer shuts off after a bit and I keep needing to select "optimze" to get it going again.  Before it would keep running all day unless I shut it off.  Is this supposed to be?

Thanks!
